Canadian Dental Care Plan in Guelph

Get the dental care you need with clear guidance on your CDCP coverage, costs, and next steps.

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)
Wellington Dental Clinic

How to Use Your CDCP Coverage at Wellington Dental Clinic

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps eligible Canadian residents reduce the cost of oral health care when they do not have access to private dental insurance. Wellington Dental Clinic accepts CDCP patients at our downtown Guelph office.

If you have an active CDCP member card, contact our team before your visit. We can confirm your coverage details, review the services recommended by your dentist, and explain any amount you may need to pay before treatment begins.

Call 226-314-3614 or contact Wellington Dental Clinic to book an appointment and tell us that you have CDCP coverage.

What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The CDCP is a federal dental benefit administered by Health Canada with claims managed by Sun Life. It is designed to make eligible oral health services more affordable, but it is not the same as free dental care or private dental insurance.

The amount paid by the plan depends on the service, the CDCP fee, your adjusted family net income, applicable frequency limits, and whether preauthorization is required. You may still have a co-payment or other charges that the plan does not cover.

Am I Eligible for the CDCP?

Who May Qualify for the CDCP?

According to the Government of Canada, you must meet all four of the following requirements to apply:

  • You do not have access to private dental insurance or coverage.
  • You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed the required Canadian tax returns.
  • Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000.
  • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Eligibility is determined by the Government of Canada, not by the dental clinic. Coverage must be renewed for each benefit period. Check your current status through your My Service Canada Account or the official Canadian Dental Care Plan website before booking care.

What Dental Services May Be Covered?

The CDCP may contribute to a range of oral health services when they are clinically recommended and meet plan rules. Depending on your coverage and the treatment required, eligible services may include:

  • Dental examinations and diagnostic X-rays
  • Preventive services such as scaling, polishing, fluoride, and sealants
  • Restorative care such as fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Periodontal treatment for the gums
  • Removable dentures and certain denture services
  • Oral surgery, including some tooth extractions
  • Certain crowns and other services that may require preauthorization

Being listed as a covered service does not mean the CDCP will pay the full cost in every case. Frequency limits, eligibility dates, preauthorization requirements, CDCP fees, and your co-payment may affect the amount covered.

Your dentist will first assess your oral health and recommend care based on your needs. Learn more about general dentistry in Guelph.

How Much Does the CDCP Cover?

How Much Will the CDCP Pay?

The CDCP reimburses eligible services according to fees set by the plan. These fees may differ from the fees charged by a dental clinic. Your adjusted family net income determines the percentage of the CDCP fee that the plan may cover:

  • Below $70,000: 100% of the CDCP-established fee for eligible services
  • $70,000 to $79,999: 60% of the CDCP-established fee for eligible services
  • $80,000 to $89,999: 40% of the CDCP-established fee for eligible services

Even when the plan covers 100% of its established fee, you may have to pay the difference between the CDCP fee and the clinic fee, as well as costs for services the plan does not cover. We will discuss the expected patient portion with you before treatment whenever the information is available.

What to Bring to Your CDCP Appointment

To help us confirm your information and submit an eligible claim, please bring:

  • Your CDCP member card or welcome letter
  • Your CDCP member ID and coverage start date
  • Government-issued identification
  • Information about any applicable provincial or federal social dental program
  • A list of medications and relevant health information for your dental assessment

If your coverage has not started, has expired, or cannot be confirmed, the CDCP may not pay for services received on that date. Contact Service Canada if you need help with your application, renewal, or eligibility status.

What to Expect at Wellington Dental Clinic

Your appointment begins with an assessment of your teeth, gums, symptoms, and treatment needs. After the examination, we will explain the recommended care and check whether the proposed services are eligible under your current CDCP coverage.

Some treatments require Sun Life preauthorization before care begins. Preauthorization is not a guarantee that every cost will be paid. We will review available coverage information and discuss known costs so you can make an informed decision.

For urgent pain, swelling, a broken tooth, or another time-sensitive concern, ask about our emergency dentistry services. Coverage still depends on your active CDCP status and the services provided.

Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your visit to our Guelph clinic.

Does Wellington Dental Clinic accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

Yes. Wellington Dental Clinic accepts CDCP patients in Guelph. Please tell our team that you have CDCP coverage when booking and bring your member information to the appointment.

Is dental care free under the CDCP?

Not necessarily. The CDCP pays a percentage of its established fees for eligible services. You may owe a co-payment, the difference between the CDCP fee and the clinic fee, or the cost of services the plan does not cover.

Can the dental clinic tell me whether I qualify for the CDCP?

No. The Government of Canada determines eligibility. You can check your application or coverage status through your My Service Canada Account or contact Service Canada.

Do I need preauthorization before treatment?

Some services require preauthorization from Sun Life. The need for preauthorization depends on the treatment and current plan rules. Our team can review this after your dentist recommends care.

What happens if my CDCP coverage has not started yet?

Services received before your coverage start date are not covered by the CDCP. Confirm that your coverage is active before your appointment, especially if you recently applied or re-applied.

Will I need to pay the full cost upfront?

For eligible CDCP services submitted to the plan, CDCP patients should not be charged the full cost upfront. You remain responsible for applicable co-payments, amounts above the CDCP-established fee, and non-covered services.
